The Citadel

Redefining Community

One table at a time

“The Citadel is a space in Glenwood, Durban where people gather to connect, create, eat, work, and build something meaningful together. Whether you’re looking for great coffee, a place to work, a community lunch, or somewhere you simply belong — you’re welcome here.”

The Citadel Dream

It started with a question. Back in 2013, our friend Mark Slaughter woke up one morning wondering why most Church buildings sit locked and empty six days out of seven. If life happens every day — work, creativity, friendship, struggle, growth — why do the buildings meant to serve people only open on Sundays? Over the years that followed, conversations with friends and dreamers in Glenwood slowly shaped it into something bigger: a vision for a different kind of space.

Why is it called The Citadel?

In ancient cities, a citadel was the inner stronghold — the place ordinary people went when they needed safety, food, rest or refuge. It was the heart of the city within the city; somewhere life still flourished even when things outside were hard. That is at the heart of the Citadel. It’s purpose is to be a space of abundant life, built around serving the community.

Life at the Citadel

The Citadel exists to be a city within a city, and it has been so exciting to see this dream unfolding as a lived reality. It is a place where faith, work, creativity, hospitality, and community intersect. Each space here has been designed to help you connect, contribute and flourish. Come and experience it for yourself!

How you can partner

In 2024 we purchased the Port Natal Dutch Reformed Church building at 455 Esther Roberts Road, Glenwood. A R6 million building, bought through a 7-year instalment sale agreement. We designated this space as The Citadel with a heart to serve and bless the wider community.

We are still trusting God for the full repayment of the loan amount and much more that God wants to do here, and we invite you to partner with us. There’s more than one way to be part of what’s happening at The Citadel. You don’t need to give money — though we’d be grateful if you do. You can give your time, your skills, your prayers, or simply pop in, grab a coffee and connect.
